VA - YU Punk Vol 1 and Vol 2 (Punk Rock From Yugoslavia 1978-1986)

From 1960's France we now go to 1970's and 80's Yugoslavia. It should be no secret to any follower of the blog that I am a huge punk rock fanatic and have in fact already posted one compilation covering the scene in Yugoslavia. 
Yugoslavia was unique in that it was essentially the only Socialist state where punk was really tolerated. Tito's brand of Socialism made for a unique mix of state authoritarianism with western freedoms giving most the opportunity to have somewhat free speech and expression. Now I'm sure when most people hear the name Yugoslavia the last thing that comes to mind is punk rock. 
Yet this compilation shows just how much of what was happening in places like London and New York had an influence on the music in Belgrade, Zagreb, Sarajevo, and Ljubljana. There's everything from bands like the great Pekinska Patka with a sound reminiscent of the classic punk bands like The Ramones, Clash, or Buzzcocks. To Kontraritam which features a clearly ska and two-tone influenced sound. And even some bands with a much more hardcore style of playing. Simply put if you enjoy punk and want a great introduction to probably one of the least known punk scenes of Europe then I highly recommend giving this a listen.

VA- C'est Chic French Girl Singers From The Sixties

Have not posted anything in awhile however anyone who has ever followed the blog will know that I am a big fan of ye-ye and the entire French pop scene of the 1960's. The incredibly catchy tunes, extremely talented singers, and sensual overtones make the 60's French music scene a personal favorite of mine. Featuring artists like Francoise Hardy and France Gall this. compilation does a great work of putting together some of the best material from some of the various female artists of this era.
I would highly recommend this album for anyone wanting an introduction into this period and style of music. As well as for anyone who just wants to have a small taste of some amazing songs from this era all compiled in one place.

Los Saicos - Punk From Peru 1965

When people talk about the precursors to punk rock bands like The Stooges or The Velvet Underground are likely to be mentioned. However there is a little known band from mid 1960's Peru that was already playing the style of music that some years later would become synonymous with punk. Fast and loud songs became a calling card of Los Saicos. Their most famous song "Demolicion" can only be described as having lyrics expressing the complete opposite of the mainstream 1960's peace and love culture. If you are interested in punk rock or garage rock then I really recommend giving Los Saicos a listen and if you would like to learn more about the band there is now even a short documentary about them on youtube worth checking out.

William Onyeabor

Today I thought I would share some music from one of the most mysterious and best musicians to come out of the 70s-80s Nigerian music scene, William Onyeabor. I first heard his music a few years back and instantly became addicted though with the exception of a few songs there wasn't much material out there and there was absolutely no information out there on who William Onyeabor was. His music is very hard to describe almost a mix of Afro-Funk or Afro-Rock with way ahead of its time electronic that makes for an extremely unique sound. His music also used equipment such as synthesizers which at the time were way out of budget for the vast majority of African musicians and studios giving rise to the theory that Onyeabor was backed by someone "big" in Eastern Europe and thus the source of his money and equipment. Never the less through his music Onyeabor shows some amazing talent and creativity in making some amazing music. I usually like to upload full albums to the blog but this is one of those times when I will only upload a sample of a few songs. The reason for this being that independent label Luaka Bop just released the album "Who  is William Onyeabor?" and if you like the songs I am uploading here I highly encourage you to buy this album to support this label and encourage them to release more if this super rare material.

V.A. - Central America In The 1960's and 1970's

When one thinks of the countries of Central America during the 1960's and 1970's the images that come to mind are those of military dictatorships, communist guerrillas, and wars that would have an impact on the region for decades to come. However during this same time period many countries in the region experienced what is often described as a "golden age" of music. Here is a small compilation that I have put together featuring music from various artists and various countries. Throughout you can hear the clear influence that some of the popular western genres like rock an ye-ye had on the local bands sometimes getting mixed with an added tropical flavor. Great download to check out for anyone interested in music from these two decades and for anyone curious about this part of the world that to most outsiders is not really known for its music.

V.A. - Radio Zid - Rock Under The Siege Sarajevo

I will say that for the most part I am not the greatest fan of live albums however the one I am bringing to you today is one of those few exceptions and the story behind this album makes it all the more amazing.  Rock Under The Siege was put together in 1995 in Sarajevo in the middle of the longest military siege in modern history. Prior to the war in Bosnia, Sarajevo had been a center for many rock, punk, ska, etc. bands that had been influenced by their peers in the west. As the war commenced Radio Zid became one of the only radio stations in all of Sarejvo to continue broadcasting music. Often times resulting n many DJs and radio broadcasters literally risking or losing their lives simply trying to get to their work. In 1995 in the midst of some of the most intense fighting Radio Zid put together a concert with some of the bands that remained in Sarejvo. There is some great material on this album however I will go ahead and say that my version is not complete it only contains a few tracks from what would be the full album. Even an actual physical copy seems almost impossible to find online so if anyone knows where to find or buy the full album please let me know. None the less the version I am uploading has some great material, personal favorites are the live and studio versions of Sara's Dream by Lezi Majmune.  Check this album out it is a great introduction into the little known rock scene of Bosnia and the former Yugoslavia a great album worth giving a listen to.

Various Artists - Cracks in The Iron Curtain Part 1

Today's post comes from the great blog over at http://michaelvee.livejournal.com which I highly recommend checking out if you are a fan of pure 60's rock. This compilation basically captures what were many of the 60's era artists in Eastern Europe. Of course what one must keep in mind is that at this time period in almost any East European country playing any form of rock or western music could get you a lot of unwanted attention from the government. Records and recordings for a lot of these groups were often quite rare since the material was almost entirely homemade. If you are a fan of any type of rock music especially the classic stuff from the 60's then I highly recommend giving this compilation a listen.

Minor Threat - Complete Discography

To this day Minor Threat is one of my favorite punk bands and one that I think played a crucial role in the original punk music scene of the 1970's and 1980's. The thing that Minor Threat is best known for besides their fast and angry sounds is their "straight edge" lyrics. The term straight edge comes from a song of the same name by Minor Threat which describes the band's frustration mainly with drugs and alcohol and how the world especially young people are obsessed with these things. The thing that to me makes Minor Threat unique is that while certain artists preach one thing and practice a whole other thing Minor Threat and especially their vocalist Ian MacKaye really practiced what he preached. Ian would even often times refuse to play shows were people of all ages were not allowed in because of alcohol being served.
This is one of those bands that much like The Clash and others that I have posted on the blog I not only enjoy their music but also agree with their message. If you like any form of rock or punk rock and have never heard of these guys than I strongly recommend you give them a listen.

Various Artists - El Lado Mexicano Part 1

Today we go back to Mexico but this time for some pure classic 60's rock. Much the same as I mentioned with Mexican SKA in my previous post early Mexican rock never really received much recognition outside of the country. The Mexican rock scene of the 1960's was very large and obviously influenced by the artists in Britain and the US. Many Mexican bands in fact focused on doing Spanish covers of British and American songs while others just developed a sound of their own. "El Lado Mexicano" is a series with various parts that gives an introduction into the wide world of what is early Mexican rock. I highly recommend this download to anyone with any interest in pure rock music as you will not be disappointed with all the great material that this download contains.

Various Artists - Afro-Rock Volume 1

For your consideration today I have a great little compilation album that I picked up at a record store a few years ago. Afro-Rock Vol 1 is one of many great releases by Strut Records who for a long time have put out some great compilations focusing on music from around the globe. This particular album has some great material that truly stretches throughout the whole continent of Africa from Nigeria to Zaire (Congo). The thing that really makes this album standout is that while all tracks have some killer rhythms and beats no two sound even remotely alike. Also many of the tracks on here would be a rare find even in Africa as they were unreleased demos or tapes that have long been forgotten about. Personal favorites of mine on this album are Steele Beauttah's "Africa" and Envy No Good by Mercury Dance Band. If you are even remotely interested in Afro-rock or just rock and funk in general then I highly recommend downloading this album as it will have you hooked for a long time to come.

Something From Asia and Something From The Middle East

As I was looking through the blog I realized I have really neglected to present any music from Asia or from the Middle East so I thought today we would fix that. First off we have a great album called "Cambodian Rocks".  I'm sure the last country that most people think of when they think of rock n' roll is Cambodia however before the years of the Democratic Kampuchea and the Khemer Rouge there was actually a fairly large rock scene in the country. One of the most notable artists from this era was Ros Sereysothea who was known as "the lady with the golden voice" and who truly produced some amazing work. Tragically her fate once Pol Pot and the Khemer Rouge came to power was much the same as that of many other Cambodians (including the majority if not all of the artists on the Cambodia Rocks compilation). People were labeled enemies of the state and either executed right then and there or were overworked in death camps. Highly recommend this compilation album as this truly is some great music that very few people outside of the Cambodian community have heard of.

We covered Asia now we move on to the Middle East specifically to Algerian artist Rachid Taha and his 2004 album Tekitoi. Taha has a very unique style combining many styles of music including the traditional Algerian pop known as "rai" and often singing in various different languages. Legend has it that while attending a Clash concert in Paris in 1981 Taha ran into the band shortly before the concert started and gave them a tape with some of his work on it. Some think that this is where The Clash got the inspiration to write the song "Rock The Casbah". Taha himself did a cover of this song (Rock El Casbah), I really recommend this one as Rachid Taha really does produce some very good music and does an excellent job of mixing various music styles which is something that only a few artists seem to be able to do with success.

Various Artists - Bloodstains Across Yugoslavia

Anybody who follows the blog will know that I am a very big punk rock fan being that bands like The Clash and The Ramones are some of my all time favorites. So I thought I would post some punk rock that is probably unknown to most people. The "Bloodstains" series compiles and releases punk rock from across the world. Bloodstains Across Yugoslavia gives you a chance to listen to some great punk music from the 1970's and 1980's which could easily rival any of  the more well known stuff from the UK and the US.
What one most also consider is that in Yugoslavia like most other East European countries at the time being a "punk" wasn't just a label it was something that could potentially get you in a lot of trouble with the authorities. Overall a great record definitely worth checking out for anyone who likes this genre of music.

The Bhundu Boys - Shed Sessions 1982 - 1986

Today we will take a trip all the way to East Africa, specifically to the country of Zimbabwe to listen to the epic sound of The Bhundu Boys. The Bhundu Boys played traditional music from Zimbabwe but with a mixture of rock, disco, and even country. They developed their own sound to the point that they basically created a new genre of music known as "jit". The Shed Sessions will give you a very good introduction to this group and their completely unique style. While also giving you an introduction to some of the coolest music and greatest guitar work to come out of Africa.

Link Wray - Growling Guitar

Link Wray is by far one of the most influential people in rock n' roll history yet he is also one of the least recognized and known about. His music is for the most part instrumental and really focused on his guitar playing since he could not sing very much as he only had the use of one of his lungs. And being of Native American ancestry Link Wray seemed to constantly try to pay respect to his heritage either through the name of his songs or through the actual style of music he played. This was unfortunately something that many record labels and radio stations did not really approve of and one of the major reasons Link Wray never became as well known as some of the other rock n' roll pioneers of the 1950's and 1960's. Yet without a doubt he has been extremely influential especially when you consider he invented the power chord which is the basis of many styles of rock music such as metal and punk.
If you just enjoy old school rock then I really highly recommend you give this album and Link Wray a listen.

Roots of Rock N' Roll 1927-1938

This album is for those who want to explore the deep roots of what we now know as rock n' roll or simply rock music. This album is filled with some great tunes from all the various genres which would combine into rock including jazz, soul, swing, country, blues, and honky tonk. Personal favorite of mine is the Tampa Kid recording of "Baby Please Don't Go" this is one of the earliest recordings of this song which would later become a blues and rock staple. If you like American music and I mean real American music not the stuff that is on the radio nowadays then you have to check out this great album.

The Specials - More Specials

More Specials is the second album released by the 1980's 2 tone band The Specials. This album though often overlooked by many contains some great tracks from a cover of the classic Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think) to Rat Race which comments on the often dull and fruitless work environment of the typical person. Personal favorites on this album are Stereotype and International Jet Set. Stereotype has a very dark and eerie sound and was written encouraging youth to not fall prey to the pressures of drug use. International Jet Set a mostly instrumental song was supposedly written by the band after their less than successful first US tour. Overall this is a great album that I would really recommend to anyone who enjoys really anything from ska to jazz and I might even say rock and pop music.

The Jam - Live at Rockplast 1980

The Jam is one of the most famous bands in Britain to come out of the 1970's-80's punk and new wave era. While The Jam were tremendously popular in Britain they had very limited success in other places such as the United States. This being a real shame since The Jam composed some great tracks combining the sounds from 60's bands like The Beatles and The Who with the newer punk and new wave style. The album that I am uploading is a live album and features some of the best tracks done by The Jam.
Really recommend you check this out if you like any of the punk or new wave music of the 70's-80's or also any of the British rock from the 1960's.

2 Bootlegs For The Price of 1

I received some requests for some Clash bootlegs and so decided I would put both of them in one post. The first one is from the live Lewisham show done in 1980, there is some great material including a great version of White Man in Hammersmith Palais. The second is from a live show in Akron, Ohio done in 1982 and a part of the Combat Rock tour of the US. Again there are some great tracks here and definitely a great live show from the not so happy dying days of The Clash.

Surf & Hot Rod Rock

As I prepare for a more than likely vacation to California this summer I have been trying to make sure everything is ready for said vacation and of course music is no exception. Of course what better music to listen to while at the beach in California than some classic surf and hot rod rock? This particular style of music was popular in the 1950's and 1960's as the surfing and hot roding movements gained popularity in the west coast of the United States. While most people have probably heard of The Beach Boys or a song like Wipeout there are many other great artists and songs from these genres that never gained such popularity.
