Jackie Mittoo - Last Train to Skaville

Jackie Mittoo one of the most influential and one of the greatest musician to come out of the Jamaican music scene of the 1960's. His instrumental songs would lay the foundation for much of the work that later artists would produce. This album Last Train To Skaville has some great tunes including a Jamaican take on the James Bond theme song and the epic Ska-Culation. If you like reggae, ska, jazz, or just plain good music than this is definitely an album you want to check out.

The Clash - Rat Patrol From Fort Bragg (2 CD)

Rat Patrol From Fort Bragg is one of the most famous of Clash bootlegs. It is made up of the original recordings by Mick Jones of what would become the Combat Rock album. A lot of these songs never saw the light of day and the original mixes were never used either due to the struggles and fighting that the band was starting to experience at this point in time. While Rat Patrol From Fort Bragg is a relatively easy bootleg ro find for download online most versions available are only made up of 1 CD and are missing some great tracks. The version I am giving you here includes some extremely rare tracks including two songs featuring Ranking Roger from The Beat on vocals. This material truly is a must have for any Clash fan.

Viento Negro - Servando Gonzales (1965)

This time I thought I would post something other than music and instead share one of my all time favorite movies. Viento Negro is a movie from the golden era of Mexican cinema and is considered one of the best movies to have ever come out of Mexico and has even made it on some lists as one of the best movies in international cinema. The movie was originally destined to be released in the US however due to disagreements between the director and some members of the original cast the movie was only released in Mexico.
The movie takes place in the 1940's in the Altar desert in the state of Sonora in northern Mexico as the federal government had just commissioned for a railroad that would connect the Baja California peninsula to the rest of Mexico be built. This was part of the rapid industrialization of post-revolution Mexico and in part a response to repeated threats by the US government of the possibility of annexing Baja California.

The movie makes light of the treacherous and often brutal conditions that workers had to endure as they built this railroad through the middle of the desert. Having to deal with everything from scorching heat to freezing temperatures and of course the relentless "Viento Negro" (black wiind). The workers are also faced with their own personal struggles as they deal with things like racism, fighting, loneliness, father son relationships, and even death. One thing to also keep in mind is that many of the events in this movie are not made up but based on things that really did occur during the construction of the Sonora Baja California Railroad.
Hope you enjoy this one because as I mentioned before it is one of my favorite movies.

Surf & Hot Rod Rock

As I prepare for a more than likely vacation to California this summer I have been trying to make sure everything is ready for said vacation and of course music is no exception. Of course what better music to listen to while at the beach in California than some classic surf and hot rod rock? This particular style of music was popular in the 1950's and 1960's as the surfing and hot roding movements gained popularity in the west coast of the United States. While most people have probably heard of The Beach Boys or a song like Wipeout there are many other great artists and songs from these genres that never gained such popularity. In this small compilation which I have put together I will attempt to introduce some of this great music which can only be properly enjoyed under the California Sun.

1. The 101ers - Surf City
2. Four Speeds - Cheater Slicks
3. The Rip Chords - Hey Little Cobra
4. The Hondells - Little Honda
5. The Ramones - California Sun
6. The Four Speeds - RPM
7. The Surfaris - Wipeout
8. The Chantays - Pipeline
9. The Rip Chords - XKE (Plus commentary)
10. The Rivieras - California Sun
11. The Surfaris - Point Panic
12. The Ventures - Blue Moon
13. The Woofers - Dragster on the Prowl
14. Link Wray - Viva Zapata
