SKA Hispano

In what unfortunately seems to be an all too common occurrence recently I've been away from the blog for awhile now but with some time to spare today I thought I would post something.
Some time back I made a post on SKA from Mexico and how outside of the Caribbean, Latin America was one of the regions were the new genre most quickly gained popularity. Yet more often than not most people and record labels in the region typically only considered SKA to be a dance and not an actual genre. Therefore a lot of SKA songs were merely thrown into the generic label of rock or 60's music making it very hard for anyone outside of the region to hear any of this work. Here is a small compilation of SKA and SKA influenced songs from the Spanish speaking world. The majority come from Mexico but there are songs from other countries to be found here. I highly recommend this download if you are a fan of not just SKA and Jamaican music but also if you are a fan of Latin music and 60's western rock/pop music as the influence from both can also clearly be heard.

V.A.- 101 Meksikanska 1951-2011 - Mexican Music From Yugoslavia - Musica Mexicana de Yugoslavia

A few months back I was looking through some blogs for old rock music from the former Yugoslavia when I came across a genre I had never heard of before Yu-Mex. Instantly intrigued I decided to do more research into what Yu-Mex was. In the early 1950's Yugoslavia was still isolated from various countries. Yugoslav leader Josip Broz "Tito" had by this point had a falling out with Stalin and the Soviet Union and being a communist nation Yugoslavia was not exactly popular with the US. So they had to look to other nations for a source of music and entertainment and the main country of choice was Mexico. It just so happened that during this time period is when Mexico was experiencing what many consider a golden age of cinema and music thus Mexican music and movies were  an instant hit in Yugoslavia.

While this concept may seem strange at first considering these are two nations half a world apart it starts to make a lot more sense when one considers that traditional Mexican music has a lot of influence from the music of Central Europe. Needless to say that there was not much information online regarding this genre except for a few postings here and there. I finally was able to find this compilation 101 Meksikanska put together by Croatia Records in Zagreb. Though I had to wait for almost a month for it to arrive from Croatia this compilation is well worth the wait as it is incredibly interesting to hear the Yugoslav covers of classic Mexican songs. Songs like Las Mananitas, La Adelita, El Soldado de Levita and Guadalajara. Even more interesting is hearing the completely unique Yugoslav songs in local language perfectly done in various styles like mariachi and bolero.
The compilation also demonstrates how even to this day a lot of the pop music in the former Yugoslav countries has maintained a completely unique Mexican and Latin influence. Highly recommend giving this a listen and while I am making all 4 CDs available for download here I also would highly recommend buying the actual album from Croatia Records (http://shop.crorec.hr/crorec.hr/ws_o_izdanju.php?IZDANJE_ID=639568&uwe_lang=en) as it contains lots of information on the artists featured in the CDs as well as the history of Yu-Mex.

Los Alegres de Teran - Recordando A Los Valientes

I have been very busy with school the past semester and so have not posted much in some time but today we go back to Mexico to listen to one of my favorite artists from the northern part of the country, Los Alegres de Teran. I have posted some of their music before and mentioned that they are the ones who are mainly responsible for making "musica norteña" popular throughout the country as well as internationally. This particular album "Recordando A Los Valientes" (Remembering The Brave Ones) is made up of songs dedicated to some of the various heroes of Mexico. People like Heraclio Bernal who many years before the 1910 Mexican Revolution was already fighting to overthrow the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz. 
This is an excellent album if you enjoy north Mexican music and as in typical "corrido" fashion you would like to learn some history while enjoying your music.

Various Artists - El Lado Mexicano Part 1

Today we go back to Mexico but this time for some pure classic 60's rock. Much the same as I mentioned with Mexican SKA in my previous post early Mexican rock never really received much recognition outside of the country. The Mexican rock scene of the 1960's was very large and obviously influenced by the artists in Britain and the US. Many Mexican bands in fact focused on doing Spanish covers of British and American songs while others just developed a sound of their own. "El Lado Mexicano" is a series with various parts that gives an introduction into the wide world of what is early Mexican rock. I highly recommend this download to anyone with any interest in pure rock music as you will not be disappointed with all the great material that this download contains.

Clasicos del Ska Mexicano (Classic Mexican Ska)

When the genre of Ska comes up the two countries that most people instantaneously think of are Jamaica and England. Jamaica being the birthplace of this music and England were it reached a wider audience. However there is one country that unfortunately has been largely forgotten in the history of Ska and that is Mexico. As any Mexican can tell you Mexico is a very diverse country with influences from just about every corner of the globe and the music is a prime example of this. Now looking at the music industry of Mexico and Jamaica in the 1960's both shared one crucial similarity and that was that record labels were all competing trying to put out the best "sounds" be it things influenced from the rock n' roll scene in the US and in Britain or homegrown stuff. In 1965 though a musician by the name of Toño Quirazco traveled to Jamaica and brought back the beats and sounds of Ska making it a huge hit in the country and also making Mexico one of the first countries outside of the Caribbean to start playing the new music genre. Unfortunately many of the artists and Ska songs from this era are almost impossible to find as the majority of people and even some record labels had no idea of their Jamaican heritage and thus just labeled them under the generic rock or tropical music genre labels making any mention of Mexican Ska in the history books almost non-existent.
Here I have put together a small compilation of some of the best of early Mexican Ska with a main focus on
Toño Quirazco who is the one that brought the genre to Mexico. For anyone who is familiar with this style of music you will be able to see in these songs some major influences from classic Jamaican bands like The Skatalites and Toots & The Maytals.

Viento Negro - Servando Gonzales (1965)

This time I thought I would post something other than music and instead share one of my all time favorite movies. Viento Negro is a movie from the golden era of Mexican cinema and is considered one of the best movies to have ever come out of Mexico and has even made it on some lists as one of the best movies in international cinema. The movie was originally destined to be released in the US however due to disagreements between the director and some members of the original cast the movie was only released in Mexico.
The movie takes place in the 1940's in the Altar desert in the state of Sonora in northern Mexico as the federal government had just commissioned for a railroad that would connect the Baja California peninsula to the rest of Mexico be built. This was part of the rapid industrialization of post-revolution Mexico and in part a response to repeated threats by the US government of the possibility of annexing Baja California.

The movie makes light of the treacherous and often brutal conditions that workers had to endure as they built this railroad through the middle of the desert. Having to deal with everything from scorching heat to freezing temperatures and of course the relentless "Viento Negro" (black wiind). The workers are also faced with their own personal struggles as they deal with things like racism, fighting, loneliness, father son relationships, and even death. One thing to also keep in mind is that many of the events in this movie are not made up but based on things that really did occur during the construction of the Sonora Baja California Railroad.
Hope you enjoy this one because as I mentioned before it is one of my favorite movies.

Los Alegres de Teran Vol. 2

Here is another great album of Los Alegres de Teran. For followers of the blog you will know from previous posts that Los Alegres de Teran were the ones responsible for making northern Mexican music popular throughout Mexico and even in the United States. This album has some great songs that are definitely worth giving a listen to. Personal favorites of mine are Modesta Ayala, Quisiera Ser Pajarillo, and Moneda Sin Valor.

Hermanos Zaizar- Canciones de la Revolucion

 This is a great album that I highly recommend to anyone with even a remote interest in Mexican music. Some of the audio is a bit rough however the songs are still classics that date back around 100 years and Los Hermanos Zaizar are some of the best artists to have covered these songs. Also for anyone interested in a bit of military history take note of songs like La Adelita and La Rielera. These songs and others mention women in combat roles during the war. This is something that is rarely mentioned however the Mexican Revolution was one of the first conflicts were women were treated equally to their male counterparts in concern to combat roles. Some women were even known to have attained high ranking positions like commanders, colonels, and such.

Pepe Guizar - Geografia Musical de Mexico

This is a great album that I highly recommend to anyone as it complies music of the many different regional styles that are found throughout Mexico, everything from the marimba of southern Mexico to ranchera and corridos from northern Mexico. The music on this album also mainly has lyrics which are focused on describing how a particular state or city are unique and beautiful. Most of the music here is by Pepe Guizar however there are a few songs by other artists. Really recommend this one to anybody as it is a great album really worth giving a listen to.

Aquí les dejo un álbum muy bueno que trae música de todos los diferentes estilos que se encuentran en México. La mayoría de las canciones son cantadas por Pepe Guizar pero hay unas cuantas que son cantadas por otros artistas. Les recomiendo mucho este álbum ya que las canciones que trae son verdaderamente muy buenas!

Cantos Ferrocarrileros

 This an album that was originally only given to workers on Mexico's national railways known as FNM (Ferrocarriles Nacionales de Mexico) sometime around the late 1980's early 1990's I believe. The album features songs of many different styles of Mexican music everything from bolero to ranchera and corridos all sharing the similarity of having to do something with the railroad. The majority of the songs (except for El Trenecito - Los Hermanos Rincon and La Rielera- Lucha Moreno) are performed by Oscar Chavez.
This is a great album for anyone who enjoys the music of Mexico and also for people to listen to what was once the great national railroads of Mexico which sadly due to corrupt governments no longer exist.
